Young Parents Group
3rd Floor, 30 Whitehall Street, Dundee, DD1 4AF
Tuesdays 1pm - 3pm &
Fridays 10am - 12 noon
(Term Time Only)
Our Group Worker and Young Parent Co-Ordinator Estelle runs this group, which continues to build our Young Parents' confidence and encourages them to engage with other community projects within the city. They have worked with Julie Muir from the V&A to assess the viability of public family areas within the museum. Their feedback has been instrumental in changing some of the planned family workshops to better accommodate visiting families. They have also worked with the PEEP (Peers Early Education Partnership) programme with Linda Dempster from Dundee City Council, where they looked at early literacy and mathematical skills with their children. Parents have also been involved in a Focus Group with Debbie Brown from NHS Tayside to look at breaking down barriers during pregnancy. Additionally, Showcase The Street provided sessions for our Young Parents regarding SQA Qualifications. Many of our Young Parents have returned to Higher Education and successfully attended college, directly due to the increased levels of confidence they have gained in attending our Young Parents group.
Family Group
Central Baptist Church, 9 Ward Rd, Dundee DD1 1LP
Wednesdays 9.45am - 11.45am
(Term Time Only)
The Family Group continues to thrive and there is always a waiting list of families who wish to attend. Over the years, families have taken part in, and experienced many different opportunities provided for them such as, nutritional guidance, healthy cooking workshops, Childsmile, physical activities and arts and crafts within the group setting. They have also enjoyed trips to Sensation, local libraries, and carried out a sponsored walk over the Tay Road Bridge to raise additional funds for the group. Families have also been engaged within the community where they decided to collect and donate food for the local Foodbank. Our CLD student, Alistair, sucessfully received £400 from Scotmid to purchase healthy food for the members of the Family Group, enabling and inspiring them to try new healthy foods and alternative snacks. This has promoted the benefits of families choosing to live a healthier lifestyle, in terms of the food they eat. These activities have encouraged families to enjoy more physical play at home and outdoors. Visiting local areas of interest as a whole group has also encouraged families to continue to visit these places by themselves.
Our Breast Buddies project is run by Amy and Kara who are our Breast Buddies Dundee Co-ordinators. It was launched just last year, but is proving to be very successful. It offers breastfeeding information and support to pregnant mums and mums already breastfeeding. We run several support groups across Dundee and have a private Facebook Page which includes live discussions and support from trained Peer support workers as well as other mums.
